How to Use These Resources
Curriculum Overview
In Grade 5 French as a second language students will gain the necessary skills for communicating in French for a variety of purposes. As beginning language learners, they will learn new vocabulary that will help them introduce their interests and hobbies, describe emotions, identify elements in the community, give directions, explore a variety of French-speaking communities, just to name a few.
Using reading, listening, speaking, and writing strategies, students are developing the ability to understand and interact for authentic purposes and real-life situations. When listening to oral French texts they will use prior knowledge to make predictions. Students are developing the ability to respond appropriately to questions about familiar topics in paired and small-group exchanges. Using graphic organizers, students will identify important information and make personal connections. When producing oral communication, they will prepare brief, rehearsed messages in French using familiar words and expressions while speaking with a smooth pace, appropriate intonation, and accurate pronunciation. Students will also gain an appreciation of culture in French-speaking communities in Canada by exploring various artists, festivals and traditions.

Apply the Learning
Choose from the following to consolidate learning across French as a Second Language
- Create your own definitions for 20 of the words in the vocabulary list.
- Create a scavenger hunt list using new vocabulary words of items you can find in your home. Include at least 10 items.
- Review your written work. Are you spelling the words correctly/did you conjugate the verbs correctly?
- Prepare a slideshow presentation with images about your ideal weekend. What would you do? Where would you go? Be creative!
- In what ways do greetings change depending on if you're talking to a friend (informal) versus talking to a teacher (formal).
- Review a resource or text of your choice and condifer the following questions: - What vocabulary is familiar to you? - What new vocabulary did you learn? - What was the goal of this resource/text?
- Draw/select a picture of Le Carnaval de Québec. Describe the image. What activities happen at Le Carnaval de Québec?
- Using a T-chart, compare Le Carnaval de Québec to a festival that you have attended. What are some similarities? What are some difference?
- Research the weather forecast for a city in Québec. What is the weather forecast for today? What is the weather forecast for tomorrow?
- Design a map of an imaginary town. Write at least three ways to get from one location to the next. What is the fatest route? What is the slowest? What is the most scenic route?
Vocabulary
Review this list of vocabulary associated with the curriculum. Practice spelling, research definitions, and find these vocabulary words when engaging with the TVO resources or completing learning activities.
