How to Use These Resources
Curriculum Overview
In Grade 8 French as a second language students will reflect on the various French-speaking communities in Europe and in Canada that have shaped francophonie, while reflecting on their own personal connection to the culture of those communities. As beginning language learners, they will learn new vocabulary that will help them use new vocabulary to explore and describe various elements of culture in French-speaking European communities and compare them with French-speaking communities in Canada, learn about the benefits of speaking French, explore sports that were invented by First Nation people, learn to share opinions and persuade their audience, just to name a few.
Students are learning to use listening strategies to highlight language conventions used to critique, express an opinion, and persuade. They are encouraged to practice self-reflection and use teacher feedback to identify strengths and set goals. When speaking in French, students are developing the ability to use prior knowledge and visual cues, as supports to produce rehearsed and increasingly spontaneous messages. They are learning to produce oral and written communication about issues that impact themselves in order to demonstrate comprehension about various topics of personal interest.
The expectations for FSL are organized into four distinct but interrelated strands:

Apply the Learning
Choose from the following to consolidate learning across French as a Second Language
- Create your own definitions for 20 of the words in the vocabulary list.
- List three French music artists that you like and explain why/how they have had an impact on you.
- Choose an informative text or video. Use a graphic organizer to state the main idea, puporse, and point of view.
- When beginning a new lesson or watching an informative video, organize your thoughts into a KWL chart.
- Create a word cloud of high-frequency words used throughout the lesson/unit of study.
- Pick one of the videos about indigenous culture. Write five questions you have to ask about the importance, challenge, and influence of their work.
- Describe a 'day in the life' of a grade 8 student. What mode of transportation do you use to get to school? What classes do you take? What do you eat for lunch?
- Pick one of the sports with indigenous roots that were introduced in the learning modules. Conduct additional research about the sport you selected. Prepare a slideshow presentation about the historical importance of this sport.
- Pick one of your favorite sports, or hobbies to write a explanation for someone who is new to that activity. Explain how to play the sport/what is needed for the hobby.
- Design a 3 day trip to a French-speaking country of your choice. What would you eat? Where would you go?
