Health and Physical Education

How to Use These Resources

TVO Learn is designed to meet each student where they are on their learning journey. Learning Activities are comprehensive and require guided instruction from an adult, while Resources for Learning, Apply the Learning prompts and Vocabulary lists work well to reinforce specific skills or to enable independent exploration of a subject. Use these helpful tips to get the most from TVO Learn.

Curriculum Overview

The health and physical education program for Grades 1 focuses on the foundational knowledge and skills that students will need in order to support mental health and well-being, develop physical and health literacy, and acquire the commitment and capacity to lead healthy, active lives. Through participating in health and physical education in the classroom and gymnasium, out of doors, in schoolyards and school gardens, and in the community, students learn to make healthy active living a part of everyday life.

The expectations for health and physical education are organized into four distinct but related strands:

  • Social-Emotional Learning Skills
  • Active Living
  • Movement Competence: Skills, Concepts, and Strategies
  • Healthy Living

Apply the Learning

Choose from the following to consolidate learning across all curriculum strands.

  • Create a list of the different ways you can show respect to others when being active in school or at home.

  • How might you design a playground that would encourage you to be physically active? What might you include in your design?

  • Imagine three or four animals. If you were to move like each animal you have thought about, how might their movements be different than one another. How might your arms and legs move differently?

  • How do you know when your body is working hard during physical activity?

  • Create a drawing that illustrates what you might need to wear in different types of weather in order to participate safely in outdoor activities.
  • How many different body parts could you use to move a ball forward? Create an illustration, collage, or move your body to show the different ways.

  • What are some ways that you can show safe behaviours in the classroom or at home? Who are the trusted adults you could go to if you needed help?

  • What are some things that you do that make you feel good and that can also help you take care of your mental health?

  • Canada’s Food Guide makes recommendations that can help you develop healthy eating habits. What are some of the healthy habits recommended in the Food Guide?
  • What are some behaviours that can be harmful to your health? What are some things you can do that are healthier or that protect your health and the health of other people?
  • When we take care of our body , we are also taking care of our brain’s health, because our brain is a part
of our body! When our brain is healthy, this helps our mental health. What sorts of
things can you do to take care of your brain?”
